 Although this is not really a DIY job and ought to be left to a Gas Safe (previously Corgo) expert, changing your boiler is something which you need to be up to speed with.
Choosing which boiler you need is not something you should just leave to the experts. It is important to make an informed decision as this is an expensive purchase.
Many old style boilers are not efficient and end up costing more money in the long run.
They can be noisy, overly large and often unattractive. Savings of up to 20% on your bills can be gained by replacing an old boiler for new.
There a number of options available when replacing your boiler:
Standard Gas Wall Hung Boiler
- These type offer an efficient rating of nearly 80%, if a copper heat exchange is used, meaning that 80% of the gas used is turned into energy.
- These are relatively inexpensive, quite small and can be easily installed by an expert.
A Floor Standing Boiler
- Inexpensive as they do not require an special fixings. Will not take up wall space, but are larger in general than a wall mounted one.
- 75% efficient for most types. Can use a balanced flue.
Condensing Boiler
- Contains a secondary heat exchanger that condensers the water vapour from the flue gases and maintains a 90% efficiency rating as a result
- Can cost up to 3 times as much as a standard boiler but can be cheaper to run.
- Gases are fanned through a balanced flue.
Combination Boiler
- Provides instant hot water, making it unnecessary to have a hot water storage tank.
- 80% efficiency
- Costs twice as much as a normal boiler and the hot water may not be able to supply to two sources at once
- The heating will go off when the hot water is being supplied.
Never forget that is essential that a Gas Safety person fits your boiler. They should also be able to advise you on the best type to suit your application.
