Plans by the Government to provide land for local communities to build gardens has been announced this week. The Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, revealed the plans to allow communities to set up gardens on underused land and to let gardeners sell the produce which isn't eaten, through local markets and shops. The demand for allotment space has increased in recent months, with people wanting to provide their own food to save money. Many councils have found that lists for allotments are very long and access to them is limited. This new scheme will mean that what was once a blot on the landscape can be put to good use and bring communities together. |
